1. Choosing the Right Tools

"A bad workman blames his tools, but a good workman knows how to choose them.” - French Proverb.

We know that washing a toilet is not the best experience in the world, but it definitely beats having people tell you your bathroom is disgusting.

No one wants to sit on a toilet with unidentified stains and funky fumes.

Most of the time, you can avoid this awkward situation with a quick scrub using the right tools. Here’s what you’ll need:

      • A toilet brush

      • Color-coded microfiber multi-surface cloths

      • A toilet bowl cleaner (Bleach or acid-based)

      • A bucket

      • A toothbrush (It’ll make sense later)

      • Disposable gloves

      • A disinfecting spray

2. Pre-cleaning Ritual

First things first, move every object on and around the toilet to a safe place. This can include the toilet plunger, air freshener, or a box of tissues. You don’t want any splash casualties when you get to scrubbing.

Secondly, you need to identify the culprits. Sometimes, the reason why you can’t seem to get a particular stain out is because you’re not using the correct cleaning product.

For example, if you notice pink or black stains under the rim of your toilet, those are most likely mold or bacteria.

Experts recommend using a vinegar and baking soda solution to remove these stains and kill any lingering spores.

Expert Tip: Never use bleach to clean mold. It only bleaches the color out of it. It doesn’t kill the mold itself.

The table below details common toilet stains, their description, and how to tackle them:

3. The Power of Soaking

One of the main reasons why it's hard for you to get stubborn stains out of your toilet is that you don’t give the product enough time to do its job.

This quick cleaning barely affects the more resilient and dangerous bacteria. In fact, they end up building a tolerance for the product, meaning it’ll get less and less effective after every wash.

The first thing you want to do is snap on your gloves and flush the toilet using a bucket of water to lower the water level without replenishing it. This ensures that when you apply the product, it’s not diluted.

Next, pour the toilet cleaning liquid around the toilet rim and let it sit for as long as it says on the bottle.

In special circumstances where your toilet bowl has stubborn stains, let it work its magic for longer. This can range from 30 minutes to overnight. Use your judgment.

4. Cleaning the Toilet Tank and Seat

As we let the toilet bowl cleaner get its contact time in, we can focus on the rest of the toilet.

First things first, run your eye over the toilet tank, seat, and lid and look for any suspicious stains, body fluids, or hair that may be lingering.

Ensure you lift the lid and the seat, and check around the flusher, and all the sides of the tank. Next, you’ll want to spray the disinfectant cleaner all around the toilet, giving an extra pump or two to the areas you noticed had stains.

Check the bottle for the recommended “sit time” and let the disinfectant do its thing. Usually, it ranges from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

Before we go on, a word to the wise.

When it comes to selecting a microfiber cloth for cleaning your toilet, we recommend you purchase a red microfiber cloth.

Red is the universal color for “danger,” and it’ll be easier to tell apart from other microfiber cloths you use around the house.

Okay, back to business. Using the microfiber cloth, make circular motions on all the surfaces, paying extra attention to the flusher, seat, and the underside of the ring.

The positively charged microfiber strands of your towel will lift the soil from the toilet surfaces leaving them impeccably clean.

Caution: Label the toothbrush “Toilet” and stow it away from others to avoid any mortifying accidents.

“I love the large size & the thickness of these towels. The best part is the choice of colors. It really makes things easier not only for cleaning but by color coding each job to make it even easier.” - Mary, Appleton, United States

5. Scrubbing Technique

Now that the product has broken down the dirt and bacteria, take your trusty toilet brush and scrub that toilet like your life depends on it.

Dunk the toilet brush in the toilet water and begin scrubbing at the top rim of the toilet. Work your way down, concentrating more effort on areas with more stains. Flush the toilet and twist your brush inside the freshwater for a nice rinse.

Finally, place your toilet brush in between the seat and the lid so that it can drip dry without splashing on your floors.

“I love the color choices and that both sides are microfiber with one side softer. Also, I love that the edges are surrounded by a seam so no unraveling. Great product at a great price.” - April McBride, United States
