How To Clean Tile Floors Naturally

How to Clean Tile Grout Naturally!

Nothing ruins the look of your tile floors like dirty grout lines. While cleaning your grout may seem like it requires harsh chemicals, we've done a bit of research on the best way to clean your grout without chemicals. The best part is that you probably already have these ingredients at home! Make cleaning easy and learn how to clean tile grout naturally.

Dust First!

Before you clean your tile grout, be sure that you've removed any dust, dirt, hair or other debris from your flooring by using a dust mop or vacuum.

#1 Grout Cleaning Solution - Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide

We reviewed many articles out there on natural cleaning solutions For grout, we recommend a paste made from this solution:

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • ½ teaspoon of mild dish soap.

Baking soda is great mild and natural abrasive that will help to remove stuck on debris without damaging the grout. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural oxidizing compound that cleans and disinfects. A mild dish soap will help break down grease and oils, making them easier to wipe away. Sounds like a winning combination!

Clean Your Tile Grout Step-by-Step

  1. Apply the paste to your grout. A simple and effective way to do this is to put the paste into a baggy, snip off a corner and squeeze the paste through the hole, similar to a make shift toothpaste tube
  2. Gently scrub the paste into the grout with a scrubbing cloth, sponge or small brush
  3. Let the paste dwell for 10-20 minutes
  4. Remove the paste with a damp cloth - warm water works best. If stains are still present, repeat steps 1-3
  5. Let air dry or use microfiber towels or mop pads

Still Have Grout Stains?

If you’ve tried repeating steps 1-3 above and still have some stubborn grout stains, try white vinegar or lemon juice. Simply dampen a cloth with either liquid and allow the cloth to rest on the stain for 10 minutes or so; gently scrub if necessary and then wipe the area clean with a damp cloth

Preventing Tile Grout Buildup

Once your grout lines are sparkling clean, make things easier on yourself in the future by taking preventative measures. Regularly dusting and mopping your floors is key to keep them looking like new. If you are already mopping your floors regularly with a microfiber mop (if not here’s our one we recommend), we suggest using some microfiber scrubber mop pads!

These are great for gently scrubbing and removing stuck on dirt and debris from your floors and they're a bit plusher than regular wet mop pads so the fibers can reach into recessed grout lines with less effort. They’re aggressive without being abrasive, so they are safe even to use on hardwood floors. Use them damp with just water or your preferred cleaning solution.
